This lantern is a prototype of a Civil War Dark Lantern. The design was based on some CW era drawings and a fair amount of speculation. The inner shell revolves to allow the candle to be shaded. Sort of a candle powered flashlight.
The inner shell is attached to the top and is turned by twisting the wire handle on top. The inner and outer shells are separate parts and the inner shell will pull out.. The parts move fine, but understand that they are metal on metal, not the smoothest operation.
Each lantern is made by hand, one at a time. There WILL be variations in finish and design from one lantern to the next.
The lantern is about 11.5” tall including the handle and 4.75” in diameter.
