Lanterns, 1660-1680

So Far I only have these two images for lanterns depicted between 1660 and 1680. I will add new images as I find them.

“Vendor of Cooked Apples and Pears”, By Giuseppe Maria Mitelli, Bologna, Italy, 1660. Source: The Met, object #51.501.3638, Public Domain.

I think it is interesting that this hand lantern is drawn so large. I estimate that this lantern is about 20” tall as drawn. I am also interested in how the handle is shown. This looks like some sort of cast handle, maybe brass or pewter, instead of a simple tin handle. I have seen this type of handle used to hang a lantern over the back of a chair.

And, once again, the lantern is shown being used with the door open. I believe this was commonly done to give more light than could show through the horn panes once they became more opaque.

Detail, “Still life with kitchen utensils”, Jacobsz ? 1675?

This large lantern is similar to several other images of large Dutch 17th century lanterns. This one has the crossed feet on the bottom. This appears often on these large lanterns. Is it a Dutch thing? I haven’t seen this from other areas at the time.
